The following information is from the BWAPI homepage.
- While a unit is attacking, StarCraft randomly adds a value between -1 and 2 to the unit's cooldown. This is why multiple units' attacks eventually go out of sync.
- When attacking from low ground to high ground, as well as attacking a unit under cover of a doodad(such as a tree), there is a 120 / 256 = 46.875% chance of missing. Melee and splash damage is unaffected. Strangely, this information is inconsistent with what is available at Blizzard's StarCraft Compendium.
